Professional Development Programs at The Medina Clinic

Medical school post-graduate, medical student, and NP/PA student professional development services offered by The Medina Clinic include training opportunities for assistant physicians, valuable clinical experience, personal statement reviews, and interview skills coaching. We offer a Bridge to Residency Program for assistant physicians, as well as outpatient externships and virtual rotations.

PROFESSIONAL SERVICES OFFERED

  • ✓ Bridge to Residency Program (Assistant Physician Program)

    The Medina Clinic accepts licensed Assistant Physicians to volunteer seeing and caring for our patients. This volunteer opportunity provides valuable hands-on clinic experience, as well as ERAS personal statement review and interview prep services. APs see patients under the direct supervision of an on-sight preceptor consistent with a residency model. Successful APs are eligible for a letter of recommendation (LoR).

  • ✓ Community & Family Medicine Externship

    During this rotation, you will participate in actual clinic sessions at The Medina Clinic and gain experience with documentation in the electronic health record (EHR) to prepare you for success as a medical resident in the outpatient clinical setting. You will have the opportunity to participate in scholarly activity leading to a publication. The Medina Clinic will provide guidance on how to obtain malpractice coverage during your rotation.

    In addition to clinical and professional skills, you will also receive ERAS personal statement reviews, and interview prep coaching. Successful externs are eligible for a letter of recommendation (LoR).

  • ✓ Community & Family Medicine Virtual Rotation

    Similar to the externship, during this virtual rotation, you will review actual clinic sessions from The Medina Clinic, and review cases to prepare you for success as a medical resident in the outpatient clinical setting. The primary objectives of this rotation are to improve your documentation and patient presentation skills. You will have the opportunity to participate in scholarly activity leading to a publication.

    In addition to clinical and professional skills, you will also receive personal statement review and interview prep coaching. Successful students will be eligible for a letter of recommendation (LoR).

  • ✓ Residency Interview Preparation

    Take advantage of unlimited personalized sessions to learn how to effectively present yourself during the medical residency interview as a great fit for the program. This is your last major opportunity to favorably impact your residency candidacy. You have to make it count!

✓ Assistant Physician Bridge to Residency Program

For: Assistant Physicians Licensed in the state of MO​.

Goal: 

To serve as a bridge to medical residency for elgibile medical school graduates (MSGs).

 What you put in:

  • Become a licensed assistant physician in the state of Missouri.

  • Volunteer to provide a community service by seeing patients at The Medina Clinic, a not for profit charitable primary care clinic, for a full day per month under direct supervision.

  • Comply with all operational and clinical protocols set forth by The Medina Clinic.

  • Exhibit the highest level of professionalism.

  • Register for The Medina Clinic's Family & Community Medicine Clinical Competency Tele-rotation for 4 weeks, which will equip you with knowledge on how to complete office visit notes and how to present patients.  Fees for this tele-rotation are discounted for assistant physicians volunteering at The Medina Clinic.

What you benefit out of the program:

  • Improved chances of matching to an ACGME residency program.  Since 2016, 55% of all assistant physicians at The Medina Clinic, who were unsuccessful during the previous cycle of The Match, successfully matched or matriculated to a residency program.  Volunteering at The Medina Clinic is especially helpful to have a more successful residency interview.

  • Acquire relevant and meaningful hands on clinical experience in the United States as a licensed clinical practitioner.  This experience includes but is not limited to independently conducting office visits, completion and signage of clinic notes, prescribing medications, ordering laboratory tests and imaging studies, referring to specialists, assisting with and performing office procedures, developing plans of care, and seeing patients during longitudinal follow up office visits.  Office visits are under direct supervision of an experienced licensed clinical practitioner.

  • Acquire experience presenting to a preceptor, which is a vital skill during residency training.

  • Benefit from a network of peers at The Medina Clinic, who are going through the same thing you are.  This network will give you added awareness of trends and factors for success for the current cycle of The Match.  In addition, you will have the contact information of all previous assistant physicians who have matched into residency programs as well as the names of the programs where they have are either currently completing or previously completed residency training.  To date, at least 5 ACGME programs have taken multiple volunteer assistant physicians at The Medina Clinic.

  • Complementary personal statement review.

  • Complementary interview preparation.

  • Free malpractice coverage.

  • ERAS Letter of Recommendation based on performance.

  • Participate in scholarly activity leading to a publication.

What you put into the rotation:

  • Registration for the program and payment of applicable fees.

  • Attendance of four weekly zoom sessions with punctuality and professionalism.

  • Active participation in review of cases and exercises.

  • Active participation in clinic sessions, and abidance with clinic policies & procedures.

  • Obtain malpractice liability coverage (The Medina Clinic can help direct you on how to obtain this).

  • Work on assigned scholarly activities during the week.

What you benefit out of the rotation:

  • Valuable hands on clinical experience.

  • Letter of Recommendation for deserving participants.

Skills:

  • Learn the components of high quality clinical care that are satisfactory to attending physicians.

  • Learn the expectations of timely completion of clinic notes and other documentation etiquettes.

  • Practice critical thinking and clinical decision making on actual patient encounters.

  • $500 per 4 weeks for medical students and medical school graduates.

  • Registration for the course and payment of applicable fees.

  • Attendance of four weekly zoom sessions with punctuality and professionalism.

  • Active participation in review of cases and exercises (must be willing to turn your zoom camera on).

  • Work on assigned scholarly activities during the week.

What you benefit out of the rotation:

  • Personal statement Review.

  • Letter of Recommendation for deserving participants.

  • Learn the components of high quality clinical care that are satisfactory to attending physicians.

  • Spend 1-2 hours of your own time preparing by using The Medina Clinic's Method of Preparation

  • Preparation for optimal performance during the residency interview.

  • Benefit from other residency candidates who are also interviewing, and thereby benefit from their experiences and advice (if there are multiple customers of this service available).

  • Learning a Method of Preparation that will serve you well for the remainder of your professional career.

What you put in:

  • Registration for the service and payment of applicable fees.

  • Attend an introductory zoom meeting.

  • Attendance of a zoom meeting where the following are reviewed:

    • Tips on how to construct an effective personal statement.

    • Discussion of process of draft review.

  • Submission of a draft personal statement as well as submission of CV (as a Microsoft Word document, not a PDF).

What you benefit out of the service:

  • A polished final draft personal statement ready to submit to ERAS or other program.

Cost: 

  • First Personal Statement: $200.

  • Each Additional Statement: $100.
